Ein Gedi Nature Reserve Private Tour
Tour Overview
Perfect for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts this private tour will allow you to get closer to Israel’s natural beauty. You will get the opportunity to explore Ein Gedi Nature Reserve – a unique desert oasis on the shores of the Dead Sea – and to hike alongside the Arugot Stream where you can wander through flourishing vegetation and a spectacular rocky landscape. Take a peek at the local wildlife too as you spot nimble ibex and wild goats balancing on the nearby cliffs and rock hyrax lounging in the sun.
Taking approximately 3 hours this hike allows you to experience the best of Israel’s natural wonders. Swim in natural pools and get close to stunning waterfalls as you traverse the hiking route. Experience historical Israel by visiting the neighboring Ein Gedi Kibbutz – the site of a 1,500-year-old excavated synagogue with its stunning floor mosaic. Next explore the glorious Ein Gedi Botanical Garden to encounter a collection of plants, including indigenous species. Here you can also venture around beautifully themed gardens such as the cactus garden, palm garden and statue garden, witnessing extraordinary views along the Dead Sea coastline that stretch to Mount Sodom.
Itinerary
This thrilling private tour begins when you are picked up and transported in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle to Ein Gedi Nature Reserve. An oasis in the intense heat of the Judean Desert, Ein Gedi is located on the shoreline of the Dead Sea. It is renowned for its meandering streams and flourishing flora that provide moments of serenity in the heat of the desert. Unsurprisingly, this desert refuge also attracts the attention of wildlife, such as the ibex, which navigate narrow cliff ledges that border the streams. Lasting approximately 3 hours, the tour of Ein Gedhi takes place on foot, and follows the route of the Arugot Stream.
Along the way, there is an opportunity to take a break and swim in naturally formed pools that were crafted by powerful water forcing its way through crevices in the neighboring rock formations. Following the hike, visit the nearby Ein Gedi Kibbutz to explore an excavated 1,500-year-old synagogue with its spectacular floor mosaic adorned with geometric shapes. The synagogue provides proof that Jewish communities inhabited the Judean Desert over a 1,000 years ago. Look closely and you may spot an inscription on the mosaic which describes a closely held secret of the original community. Discovered accidentally in 1965 this magnificent mosaic was uncovered whilst the kibbutz were fitting water pipes. An ancient scroll of Leviticus was also among the unearthed artifacts.
Kibbutz Botanical Garden is the final stop on this private hiking tour. Discover indigenous plant species and those from all corners of the globe together including rare species. Marvel at the range on offer, from enormous baobab trees to cacti, and the fruits of olive, pomegranate, and fig trees. As you wander around the botanical gardens enjoy the statue, cactus, and palm garden areas as well as breath-taking landscapes at numerous viewing points that stretch out across the Dead Sea Shore shoreline to Mount Sodom.
